Doin' The Hurley

By Jay - Posted on 10 August 2010

Some of the best travel advice we've received has come from the "Kindness of Strangers"... I was sitting in the EcoRoamer outside of the Gone Whistler Bakery Cafe (a fantastic stop, with local organic food & great coffee) when "Ray" walks up to the truck and says: "awesome machine. Have you done the Hurley yet?" "ummm, no I don't think so..." "do you know The Hurley?" "nope." "do you even know what the Hurley is?" "sorry, no" Then he says: "OMG, his thing was built for doing the Hurley, you've got to do it..." And then he proceeded to tell me that on the route north to Prince Rupert to catch the ferry to Alaska, you get to Pemberton and you're faced with a choice. Either you can follow hwy 99 to the right and drive the paved highway "straight" to Lilloett, or you can turn left, go 28km and take the dirt Hurley Forest Service Road through "some of the most beautiful scenery in B.C. and still wind up in Lilloet. That sounded like a philosophical challenge if I ever heard one (loyal readers will remember our old URL of www.ontheroadlesstraveled.com - so, we decided to take the 5hr detour and "Do the Hurley" It now qualifies as one of my favorite drives in the world. The entire road is hard-packed gravel / dirt, and there's nothing particularly technical about it other than some corrugations. We saw lots of Subarus blasting along it, so I think any reasonably capable 4x4 should have no problems. If you do, you will be treated to some pretty incredible & diverse scenery, including: - Rocky mountain vistas - rainforest two-track trails (turn right at the fork leading to ___) - the amazing rock-cliff walls on either side of Carpenter lake, dam and canyon. -old gold mines and mining towns -whitewater raging rivers with first nations fishermen and their looong pole nets. Overall, it was a great drive. I will upload our GPS waypoints HERE, as well as some photos from the trail, as soon as I have the connectivity. Thanks "Ray"!
